THE DUTCH CREATED THE NETHERLANDS CREATED BY A KOREAN, 2022

As I define myself as a microscopic ambassador of diasporic living, I am eager to explore the analogous and drastically different experiences in my life between the Netherlands and South Korea. It becomes a kind of ritual for my drifting identity to adapt to new settlements by breaking the dichotomy between the self and others. Through admiration and satirization of both cultures, I seek to create collaged monuments that interrogate these two societies by playing around entrenched stereotypes about both of them. These works visualize the pseudo-Dutch landscape, with elements of South Korea slipping in. These pieces present two different topics: “The sun, moon and a peak: the high density of population within limited space” and “Respect our +++ workers: the night view.” Both are subtle connotations of my cultural fragments that are partly interwoven.

“The sun, moon and a peak” is the collage works containing many social and cultural connotations such as mountain, apartments, North Korea’s hotel and Korean traditional symbolic painting.

“Respect our +++ workers” is the collage works containing different connotaions such as red light district, and Korean neon red cross in the cities, and historic red light district in South Korea.
