Project Background
Due to COVID-19, people now tend to spend more time at home.
Meanwhile, the plethora of digital content available seems to have replaced the need to travel. However, I believe that OTT services cannot replace the dynamic experience of travelling, such as making travel arrangements, heading to a destination and meeting new people.

Project Pavel plans to provide a service for discovering meaningful place where in-person experience is important. To achieve this goal, it has created and shared a service for travelling with a toolkit and online book. The project is supported by the Gyeonggi Cultural oundation in South Korea.

Project Context & Concept – What is ‘Pavel’?

‘Paval’ was a method for communication in the Joseon Dynasty.
The messenger had to ride horses to travel to several regions to deliver confidential documents quickly.

Pavel combines ‘paval’ and ‘travel’, which means that travellers gather meaningful information and deliver it through trips.
Travellers who participate in Pavel play a role in recording and sharing their experiences about a travel destination.
In other words, they are doing a job of making and delivering information, which goes beyond enjoying their travels.

Structure & Procedure – How to Pavel ?

The project aimed to help travellers focus on their travel experiences and how to easily express their experiences.
The project has been completed with travellers according to the following procedures.

1. Select topics     2.Find participants     3. Distribute Pavel cards and collect result data.     4. Display a Pavel popup Gallery

When people apply to participate in Pavel, they will first choose where to visit with the online Pavel guide and receive the Pavel set, which includes an object, cards and sticker. With the Pavel set, they can visit the Pavel locations and record their vivid experiences. Finally, they will post the completed Pavel card to us. The records will be visualised into their own graphics, following the information they recorded. All the experiences and visuals will be shared in an exhibition and on the website.

As a pilot service, using the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as a theme,
ten travel destinations were chosen as Pavel locations.
The collected data has been translated into unique images representing the participants’ travel experiences.
Unfortunately, the pop-up exhibition has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
